This short answer is "Unlike you may have read about in some Perl books, 
the use of three part versions unless entirely necesary is discouraged. 
STILL".

Edge cases like this keep popping up, and if you can avoid three part 
versions, and just use a more traditional 0.01 versioning, please do so.
