Careful what you attribute to whom. Does govt. really say "were doing
fine" or do they say that "employment is improving"? Make sure that the
spin doctor isn't a) the media b) yourself adding biases based on
personal feelings.  

I am not really expressing an opinion one way or the other about either
the govt or the media, but just pointing out that it is a habit of
Americans (yes I am from and live in the US) to soak up everything they
hear *and* allow their own personal situation to provide an additional
slant to what someone has said based merely on their current mood, when
in fact that person may not have provided any subjective material to
begin with.  

Stock market quotes provided by common media sources are a perfect
example of this.  Local news anchors love to add a good/bad slant to a
stock's movement on any given day, "Company X was down $.40 today, while
Company B was off $5!!"... of course the first is a 10% drop while the
second is less than 1%, but $5 is a seemingly more dramatic change, so
the media would rather emphasize it....
