wage levels

For telecommuting positions, I'd like to remind you that here in Oregon,
$1000/month for a part time position is just fine. For example, an anual
salary of $50k provides the same standard of living here as $100k+ would
provide in the bay area.

You only need a few part time telecommute positions to meet that level of
income.

Here that implies, buying a large house in any neighborhood. Whichever car
you wish to drive. Vacation in Hawaii every other year, perhaps.

And a lot of working class people work FULL TIME for near $1000/month.
There are lots of people who have other things in their life than full
time work, who are happy to telecommute part time for an extra
$1000/month.

And when a company is offering it, and admitting that experience is tied
to who will work for that wage, great! There are a lot of brilliant people
who love Perl and don't have a college degree or fancy resume, who are
happy to work for a working wage doing something they love.

I know that I myself often have chosen to make little or no money, taking
a chance on a project I enjoyed and believed in, instead of doing random
crap for random corps with random ethics.

As somebody who grew up poor, and knows the value of being able to afford
things like CHEESE and ONIONS, I find it highly offensive when people send
their classist whines to this list, in the context of thier desire to have
listed targetting people of a different social class removed.

I don't usually apply for the low wage positions here either, but at times
I have, and I am sure I will again in the future. I would rather make
peanuts for a small business than make mad booty working for an
Unmentionable Evil.

So, please do have respect for the broad diveristy in the labor market,
and stop complaining about listings that you don't want to apply for. This
list is (presumably) for all Perl Hackers, and all those who need us. Not
just for YOU.

Thank you for you time, and thank you for this list.

And thank you to all the small businesses who are brave enough to list
their small positions.
