I'm currently looking for a new position. Since I want to do Perl and 
there's not many Perl-using places here in Minnesota, I'm mostly looking 
at telecommuting positions.

What I generally do is look for positions that might be interesting, and 
just ask if they'd consider a telecommuter. I never bother contacting 
recruiters about this, however. I assume that they don't have any power to 
decide these things, and it's not really in their interest to push back on 
the hiring company. However, if the hiring manager likes my resume enough, 
they might be willing to push their company to hire a telecommuter.

I also have a lot of telecommuting experience, which I mention in my cover 
letter as a way of selling myself. I think it also helps that I have some 
name recognition in the Perl community.
