People who you'd never imagine you'd run into again cross your path. You're right about "behind the scenes", too. I can think of at least two examples of someone emailing me about a resume that's crossed his or her desk, asking "Hey, Andy, don't you know this guy?", and I've had to warn the person away from hiring the candidate.
