Let's be honest. All Perl version upgrades suck. No matter whether System-Perl or some other Perl installation somewhere. The huge dependence on XS modules makes every Perl installation a nightmare. I, for example, use homebrew Perl. So far so good, but still, when I upgrade, its hours of work each time, especially if you have to cope with notorious XS modules like DBD::mysql or Image::Magick that tend to not find their include files or libs on a homebrew-based installation. Lately I switched to local::lib - just to try out whether it makes anything easier. It does not. Of course all the XS libs will become incompatible and you have a nightmare situation where even tools like cpanm will start malfunctioning and which ultimately I could only fix in a timely manner by using a vibe-coded "reinstall all problem modules" shell script, which I'll attach here. In case anybody else makes the mistake one day that local::lib will make his upgrade easier. Because I'm pretty fed up of manually fixing this stuff. A semi-stable ABI would probably be a far bigger improvement than more somewhere. I mean, Paul is not exactly a newbie. It's just that all installation paths truly suck. Though, on the other this mostly hits me on dev machines. On Linux, Debian et al do a brave job of packaging this mess.
