Simon Cozens' book

I subscribed to this list a while ago - apparently back in July - and
there's been only one message since then. I was actually looking up
subscription information on Elaine's new site, because I was not sure
that I was subscribed!

Anyways, I'm starting a new Perl class in about 2 weeks (It's through
the HWG - www.hwg.org) and I'm using Simon's new book this time around.

In my 1.5 years of online Perl teaching, I've now used Learning Perl,
Elements (Andrew Johnson) and now Beginning Perl. My audience is almost
all new programmers and non (not yet) programmers. Learning Perl is
aimed at a more clueful audience. And Andrew's book, although excellent
in most respects, confused students by its constant references to
Literate Programming. Andrew has, I think, pursuaded me that LP is a
Cool Thing, but when trying to learn Perl, the additional burden of
trying to learn LP seemed to get in the way, rather than simplifying as
was the intent.

So, now I'm trying Simon's book. I really like the chapter layout, as it
very closely mirrors my ideal class outline. I'll let you know how it
goes as we go along, if anyone cares. I'd also like to know if any of
you other folks have read it, and what you think about it.
