Well, call me a dimetrodon (Permian age 
mammal-like reptile preceeding dinosaurs)
but I give out all my notes in a fifty-page
syllabus on paper.  I use the whiteboard
to highlight points and for odd diagrams,
but they have all the meat of the notes
on their desk.  

I like this because my students:

*)   have no excuse for not being prepared.
     (they don't come prepared, but they have
     no excuse).

*)   are not scribbling when they should be 
     listening.

*)   are not asking their seatmate what I 
     just said when the seatmate should be 
     listening. 

*)   don't scribble some figment of their 
     imagination, and then expect me to
     change perl to meet what they thought
     I said.  A lot of my students seem to 
     start this class thinking that I 
     represent "the perl Corporation" and 
     that I can run back after class to
     implement changes that they suggest.
     They get over this, but I always get
     one or two.  I also get this in my 
     Unix classes.

*)   It makes it easier for me to walk 
     around the class while I talk which 
     keeps the students awake.
