Not an archeologist but I once flew an American 
archeologist/anthropologist around in the arctic aboard the oldest 
Norseman Mark-III floatplane then still flying in the world (serial #13) 
and got myself an almost personalized education about 'some' topics. One 
he told me about was anecdotal traces of almost super-beings there, 
conceptually maybe comparable to our angels of old. They seemed to 
appear suddenly, but not flying and had not even imagined wings, and no 
one really knew where from or to, and they had talents (technology) like 
no one else. At some point they just stopped being seen. His theory was 
that these may have been survivors of a previous civilization, people 
who eventally succumbed to new challenges like we would in a 
neo-stoneage without our dentists not to mention youtube :-)

At the time he was researching eskimo inukshuk 'navigational road-signs' 
which he claimed were erected mostly by vikings because eskimos did not 
have the technology to pile up stones of that size so high (with which I 
as world renowned  Dr. Knowitall, completely agreed at the time).
