Yeah, I know I'm a bit corporate. I'll come to Clonezilla and Macrium in 
a bit which I fully endorse but there is a free application that I don't 
think I have ever seen here.

Although this was initially developed by a couple of Russians it's now 
owned by corporate America and the Russians play no part in it. I'm told 
the free version uses exactly the same codebase as their paid versions.

Downside it has a ~500 page manual but seems to offer at a quick glance 
much of what Macrium Reflect X [the paid for version I use] offers. If 
true that's cool. Macrium is UK based, and Reflect X is a complicated 
but top of the line product and I get support so I ain't leaving but for 
the free at all costs crowd this looks worth a look at. The only 
downside I noticed and I didn't study it for too long was you need an 
account and they wanted my inside leg measurement. Your mileage may 
vary. This appears to be a massive US company, so would I trust it, well 
yes. They have no skin in the game of getting caught doing anything 
nefarious with big corporates as their customers. I'm sure Shadow would 
concur.

Clonezilla, I have use Rescuezilla to clone my laptop. It's bitlocker 
encrypted, yunno they call it Device Encryption but it's bitlocker. 
Clonezilla/Rescuezilla backed it up and I recovered it to a VMWare VM. 
VMWare has vTPM so you can unlock the encryption. That's pretty cool but 
despite being told otherwise C/R also only backs up the encrypted blocks 
that contain data, so only used space, obviously compressing that is 
pretty impossible but still it only backed up 100 of 500GB. Recovered 
worked. 1/2 hr to backup. Once tested it's always going to work because 
it's used offline.

It still seems to work but I'm not sure how current it is, that's my big 
problem with it.
