Hi Gale, Thanks for your reply.... The version of audacity I have installed is 2.1.2-1 I installed it from Ubuntu Software centre. There's something very curious, however. There is no ~/.audacity-data/ directory. In /var/tmp/ there's no audacity directory either. This was a clean install because an upgrade was unsuccessful. Even a clean install hasn't been a great experience, although better than the upgrade. I've just cleaned out Audacity and reinstalled in after doing apt-get autoremove apt-get purge apt-get update etc etc.... Still makes no difference. Still no ~/.audacity-data/ directory. Also, still the same version. Audacity still doesn't launch either.
