The Internet exists because tax dollars funded the development of its techn=
ological underpinnings. It wasn't private companies that invested their ca=
pital to create the first wide-area packet-switching network and the TCP/IP=
protocol suite. It was American taxpayers who funded it through DARPA.
You want companies to reap all of the financial benefits of public investme=
nt in everything from the development of TCP/IP to the public schools that =
educated their employees. But God forbid that we should suggest even modest=
protections for consumers who come to rely on the services provided by tho=
se companies. Yahoo should not be able to tell a bunch of people dying of t=
hyroid cancer that they have a month to find a new service provider for the=
ir thyroid cancer list and have their terminally ill members sign up for, a=
nd learn to use, the new service between chemotherapy sessions.

ich made $31.6 billion in the first quarter of this year alone, would be dr=
iven into bankruptcy by leaving a list server up for another three to six m=
onths to comply with a government regulation that users be given more notic=
e of a shutdown. It would not lead to starving, ex-Verizon employees livin=
g on the streets. I would not be at all surprised to learn that shutting d=
own the groups was so that Verizon/Yahoo could terminate some employees who=
had been running and supporting the service.

Do you think that health insurers provide affordable coverage for people wi=
th diabetes, heart disease, cystic fibrosis, or Parkinson=E2=80=99s disease=
because they feel that they =E2=80=9Cowe it=E2=80=9D to them, or because t=
hey expect that to be a profitable venture? Of course not; they do it beca=
use they are required to by the ACA. Sneeze guards over salad bars aren=E2=
=80=99t there because the restaurants felt some debt to the public; they ar=
e required by government health regulations. Your local mall doesn=E2=80=
=99t have handicapped parking, wheelchair ramps, elevators, and wheelchair =
accessible restrooms because they expect to make a huge profit from people =
in wheelchairs; they have them because of the ADA.=20=20
You=E2=80=99ve set up this false dichotomy in which we have to choose betwe=
en completely unregulated capitalism or regulations so onerous that they el=
iminate all opportunities for a business to make a profit.=20=20
