Thinking of dumping PT HD and going with Symphony 64 PCI-e and two 8-cores...

It's time to upgrade the DP 2.5 G5 running my PT HD6 rig with two  
Accel cards (2 regular and 2 digital Digi 192 interfaces). It's  
obviously going to be a significant investment, and I'll also need a  
new PCI-e to PCI Magma chassis. I run this system along with four  
additional PC's (several years old) and one additional Mac for  
virtual instruments, and a large sample library (Full VSL, EWQLSO,  
etc.). In short, when everything's on, I've got a real machine shop  
going (fortunately, it rages away in a machine room).

Now...

I just watched all the videos on the Apogee site on their new  
Symphony 64 PCI-e system, and how you can link up two Macs. For my  
studio needs, 16 analog i/o's would be fine. That's what I've got now  
with my PT rig.

At this point, I'm REALLY impressed with this new Apogee system. I  
work all the time in Logic, so I don't need PT. I'm thinking making  
the switch to Logic native, using this new system, plus an additional  
computer for VSL, etc. (i.e. two 8 core Maces to replace everything  
I'm running now) would make my life a LOT more simple, and give me a  
much more powerful, crash-free and stable system.

I've got nice analog front-end stuff, and I never track through plug- 
ins, so I'm thinking the 1.6 ms latency will be fine. I also expect  
that having two Macs linked via Symphony would tighten up all my  
virtual stuff a great deal. I'd love to be able to do all the things  
I can't now do with Logic because of PT (e.g. fast off-line bounces,  
automatic rendering of all session tracks, really snappy plug-in  
instanciation, no more waiting for PT to boot, a lot less spinning  
beach ball watching, no more fan noise from four Digi 192's in the  
control room, lower monthly electric bill, etc.).

Let's face it, PT HD is getting old. Now might be a good time to  
liquidate and get some money out of the system before Digidesign  
comes out with something new, and the value of PT HD hardware drops.  
The next PT system transition is going to be really painful, since  
Motorola DSP is at the end of the line, and whatever they move to  
next will mean that a lot of TDM plug-ins will most likely fall by  
the wayside.

The more I think about this, the more it seems like a no-brainer.  
With what I can still get for the Digidesign stuff I stiff have, the  
transition will probably not be that expensive.

Somebody try to talk me out of this.
