>>There is surprisingly little agreement on what is a CMS. Of Yahoo's 170
listings under Content Management, more than half (89) are not listed in any
of the other dozen or so directories.

What would be enormously helpful, I suspect, is to have the systems sorted
by some categorization scheme (hey, we have the taxonomy folks ...), which
means making some sort of decisions around what the categories are. Or
perhaps having a dynamic way that, the way vendors can add their features
in, they can add a category if they've created a hybrid product that doesn't
fit neatly into one category or another. From a technical communication
point of view, a CMS that handles technical publication content has certain
features built in that you won't find in a CMS meant for Web content. And
catalogue producers ... it may be publication content, but it's more Product
Information Management ... perhaps this CM would fit into two categories.
And then there's the newer phenomenon of blogging software becoming robust
enough to become a type of Web CMS for micro businesses. Complicated, but
better than looking at a list of 2,000 and feeling overwhelmed at the
prospect of doing any kind of justice to one's research.
