Re: p/390 question

Well, just as a quick off the top of my head answer, OS/390 is licensed to the P/390 processor,
not the machine the processor is running in. (My read, not legal advice, YMMV,etc.) In other words,
what you want to do is probably illegal and ShouldNotBeDone. 

At some point or another, IBM will most likely open up a hobbyist license or something, but it is 
very low on their list of priorities, and there is active opposition from individuals and outside companies
who perceive their financial security lies in preventing that from happening.

A possible, and perfectly legal(!) alternative for you is to run a copy of Linux/390 or z/Linux under Herc.
Herc does that perfectly, and if you really want to explore the internals of how a zSeries or S/390
machine works, you can learn a LOT. You can even learn and use HLASM  -see www.dignus.com for
information on that one. That is not a zero cost option, but the cost for a hobbyist license is not a burden
for more people. Linux and Herc of course, are available at zero cost.

Your capacity to learn is only limited by two things - your willingness to work, and hopefully your
*unwillingness* to violate IBM licensing agreements. :)

  One feels very strangle in not being able to grow my MVS skills, a

  Just wondering, isnt herc a viable choice to use for the p/390 sys 
  recovery.  It's not like one would have any spare working mainframes 
  lying around.
