David, I don't think IBM is happy about us using VM/370 or MVS3.8J, but there is very little they can do about it. I am sure they find it very embarassing that we are still using old versions of the OS when they want people to pay for new versions. They use software licenseing to drive hardware sales. So for example the second hand value of a 4381 for example is virtually nil as you can license an OS to run on it. This is a pity as IBMs main competitors do allow hobby use of old versions of their OS's or have low cost personal use licenses. So SUN Solaris and DEC VMS, TOPS10 and TOPS20 can be legally licensed for personal use on emulators. SUN OS 4.1.3 is also avaiable free for older SUN 3 machines which are unsupported for users who can't run the latest OS. Other such as SCO and Novell don't.
