OK, BITNET is not only email network. There are files, messages, and emails. For messages, there were Relay servers on some BITNET nodes. For files, there were file servers on some BITNET nodes and one of file servers offer FTP transfers. VM and VMS systems have full RSCS accesses like TELL, SENDFILE, etc.

"BITNET" only had e-mail (I don't think there are any active BITENT links).
From what I remember LISTSERV was written by Eric Thomas to implement mail lists on Bitnet.
Listserv servers still exist but are accessed by SMTP not BITNET protocols.
In the past these were gatewayed onto USENET but I get the feeling most of these gateways are dead.
As well as mail lists LISTSERV also has a file store facility accessible by sending commands via e-mail. .
I seem to remember getting MIDI files from a LISTSERV somewhere this way. I also got Atari ST software by some mail gateway.
They came to either the IBM Marketing Center machine in Manchester (MCRVM1) or later to the 4361 or 9371 at Salford University (SSSD).
Then they were copied to 5.25" floppy on an IBM PC. I had (and still have) a 5.25 floppy for the ST...
