It may not be important most of the time, but for example I'm thinking of the following case: There's a tar archive of a whole filesystem containing absolute symlinks. Now if the tar is expanded with AVFS the links will point to the wrong place. But if they are turned into relative links this case will work OK. Of course this won't work if the tar file was not made relative to the root directory.
