I have not used the archiving function yet in Moneydance. 
But one thing I would think you would have to do when 
archiving say a previous year or years.
You must print a lisst of the end balances of all accounts 
per the last date of the arcive period and after archiving 
the old period you should fill in these end balances as 
opening balances in all the accounts.
A big job but I think it is unavoidable if you want to keep 
your bookkeeping balanced.
