Thanks, Tjalco! Actually, "Archive" is supposed to do that automatically.

Here's some more information about my situation:

Apparently, in April 2010 I archived transactions before December 31,
2008, and I don't remember if I chose to keep old transactions or not.
In my current Moneydance data file, only 8 debits are shown from my
principal checking account in 2008. (A safety data file,
"moneydance_pre-archive.md," has 20 debits in December 2008 alone.) The
file "archive_08.md" shows account balances in the left pane but in the
right pane no transactions at all appear.

Somebody MUST be using this function... or does everyone just let his
primary data file grow and grow?
