Just done a similar upgrade from 2008, but not to 2012.

I thought the same as you about the side bar and missing icons but it  
really is very customizable and after a week or so I don't miss the ones at  
the top. My biggest gripe is moving the "new transaction" over to the  
extreme right. Nearly everything is done on the LHS and having to swing  
over to top right is a PITA.  You can of course have the side bar as wide  
as you like. :-)
