Keyboard LEDs

Hi all. I'm running Advmame 0.99, and I can't seem to get the keyboard
LEDs to function. I'm addressing them directly from a script (something
like "on(0,0b111)". I can see that the script is running (I spit out a
test msg) but I get no little lights.

I'm running Fedora Core 4, svgalib 1.9.23.

I have a workaround, something like 

system("setleds -l +num")

but I'm wondering if anyone else has any problems?
