FWIW, I've had no issues using gcc 4.0 to compile on my linyx box.

That being said, you have a couple of options.  The easiest, however,  
is probable to just tell configure what you're using for gcc:

./configure CC=/opt/whatever-path-you-need/gcc-3.3.4
