Chris,

Thank you for the help.  I recompiled using gcc 3.3.4 (per the command you
provided) and everything works now.

The games that would not run on my gcc 4.0 compile included every "Sammy"
driver game and many Sega games (Jurassic Park, Virtua Fighter, Alien 3,
etc.) even though I got no errors during compilation.  But compiling with
gcc 3.3.4 solved the problem!
