I believe you're absolutely right, John. Now that you mention it, I
recall reading that same thing at
http://easymamecab.mameworld.net/html/linux.htm. I'll try switching to
fb instead of X. I have a feeling it will make a world of difference.

Eric, I believe the big performance bottleneck that you're seeing is
that it's running in an X-based window and not using the frame-buffer
driver directly.  Try to build and run AdvMAME using the fb driver, with
X completely not running, and you will see dramatically better video
performance.  I'm afraid my detailed set of tip and tricks is too
distant in the past, but a few details of my system are here: =20
