Try to build and run AdvMAME using the fb driver, with X completely not running, and you will see dramatically better video performance. If I switch to "full screen mode" the game (1943kai) gets bigger and runs at normal speed, but it still leaves about 1.5 inches of black screen at the top and bottom.
