Eric, I believe the big performance bottleneck that you're seeing is that
it's running in an X-based window and not using the frame-buffer driver
directly.  Try to build and run AdvMAME using the fb driver, with X
completely not running, and you will see dramatically better video
performance.  I'm afraid my detailed set of tip and tricks is too distant in
the past, but a few details of my system are here:
