Hmm, I always just play this on the Mac so I save often and try different
things but I could see two possible options.

Put your DN on "offensive" for attack type (or whatever its called) and
build a colony ship to hit his planets.  Hopefully you still are close
enough that you can wipe out an unprotected planet with the GN.

Alternately - build a fueler and go on a rampage to see how many planets you
can take out.  You still want to slowly build up colonies, but hopefully you
can knock him down quickly.

Oh, and I guess lastly - if you have a lot of metal you could build some
fighters with the DN to improve your chances of winning battles when you go
on the offensive.

Those may work ...
