The way I often use, when I have new data downloaded from Ancestry or FamilySearch, or a rare tree from a remote cousin, is to import that into a new tree in Gramps, and then clean out all anomalies that may have come from the GEDCOM import, and which almost always appear as GEDCOM Import notes. Some may become useless events, which I can often find by sorting events by type. Then, when it's clear that I'm only interested in a known segment of that tree, like ancestors or descendants of a known person, I export that as Gramps XML, using a standard filter, like ancestors, or family descendants. The latter is important, because the standard descendant export does not include spouses, and you normally want those too. I also make sure to exclude objects that are not related to anyone, so that I don't get all sorts of unconnected notes, sources, and especially places. When I don't know where the connections may be, I import a backup of my own tree into a new one, and then add the whole GEDCOM, or backup of a cleaned import, and run the duplicate finder first. And when trees are large, I often use RootsMagic to explore those duplicates, because its duplicate people finder is way faster than Gramps', and can perform merges with a single click.
