It depends what you mean by upgrades. I have backported Gramps 5.1.5 to 
Impish (current release) and Focal (Long Term Support). I have not 
backported further to Bionic, Xenial or Trusty. This is because I need 
to prove to Ubuntu that they work before they will release them into the 
official backport archive. And I don't have the time to test them.

The original released version in Xenial (Gramps 4.2.2) is working fine 
as far as I know. And you can always stick with 5.1.2 in Focal if you wish.

You can always install a more recent Gramps deb file in an old Ubuntu 
release (e.g. from the Gramps website). But you will be the tester :-) I 
can't test all the possible combinations.

The official backports I am talking about have at least been tested to 
work, and are guaranteed to automatically upgrade without problems if 
you upgrade your Ubuntu distro (e.g. Focal LTS to the next LTS which 
will be called Jammy in a few weeks).
