 There are partial merge tools... but not an automated nor full-depth de-duplication. There is an add-on that assesses people for correlations and suggest pairs to merge. But the workflow of merging of secondary objects lacks effective tools.

The Isotammi group (a project of the Finnish Genealogical Society) has developed some tools oriented towards de-duplicating twigs of trees.

Merging remains a painful and error-prone process.
