It works as designed.

This suggestion will cause the start of each image to be less precise, you would
no longer be able to count on the number of images displayed within a 10 minute
time frame, for example.

One method to help alleviate the problem is to enable the "Preload next image"
option.

I only really see the current implementation as a problem when the time to
render each image starts to exceed the delay time set for the slideshow. Is this
the case?

If your slideshows are usually in full screen and you are using a development
release >= 1.5.2 and image rendering is slow in part because the images are
progressive jpeg or png, try enabling "Smooth image flip in full screen". The
image will be completely loaded (and scaled if necessary) before it is rendered
to the screen - the image load time will be smaller with the option set.
