gqview doesn't really show the raw file contents, but the embedded 
preview jpeg image present in most raw images. This preview image is
quite likely the same image that the camera would have produced
in jpeg mode, but is often compressed more strongly.

That is, gqview can't show anything if the raw file doesn't have a 
preview image...

Try a better raw conversion utility. Though one can get good results from
ufraw (and dcraw), it's much easier with more sophisticated products. Try
bibble (bibblelabs.com, free trial available) or the linux version of
lightzone (http://lightcrafts.com/linux/).
