Dear All:

My name is Sarah Slye a graduate student working in the field of Caucasian
history and languages: Georgia, Chechnya, etc.

I've been pretty intensely involved in a lot of work on the Chechen
language. One of my long-time colleagues wants to create a spell check for
Chechen. As I understand it, we would have to create a huge electronic
dictionary/database of the language as a first step. Chechen has some
interesting word formation patterns with a high amount of irregularity in
declension and conjugation.

We are seeking information about the time and amount of work that will be
required to create that dictionary. How does one go about starting to get
going on that first step? Technically, in what way should the words be
entered into the dictionary and what kind of process will it be?

We also do not really know what the second and subsequent steps would be.

We have among us refugee intellectuals with time on their hands. So we will
have the labor power for even an extensive project. We just must figure
out what to do and how to do it. This project will mean so much to us and
the Chechen nation as a whole.

If possible please share with us "what needs to be done" or if that is not
possible, perhaps you might be able to point us in the right direction.

Thank you so very much!

Sincerely,

Sarah E. Slye
