Mike, I did some more fiddling too and found that the patch is necessary when --enable-pdfimport is used, quite apart from it being necessary for --with-lang. A build with the patch and --enable-pdfimport succeeded and (as before without patch and without --enable- pdfimport), template usage was fine.
