Evolution2.02 Gnome Requirements

Yeah, I know this is a gnome question, but I'm hoping that somebody here
will be able to steer me in the correct direction.

I'm trying to compile 2.02 (currently running 1.4.6 and it's time to
upgrade). My machine is running RH9 with XD2 and has been kept as up to
date as possible with red-carpet.

I can compile a lot of 2.02 (libsoup, gal, gtkhtml, etc), but once I get
to evolution itself it gets mad at my gnome installation.

So I decided to try to install gnome 2.8 and am finding it a daunting
process. The gnome site says "kids, don't try this at home, get it from
your provider" (yeah, like that's going to happen for RH9). The
installations instructions say:

  "Building from source is even more difficult than normal this time,
   because GNOME 2.8 requires your existing applications to register
   themselves in the new cross-desktop MIME-type system." 

I have no idea how that's going to impact the rest of my system (heck, I
don't even know precisely what it means!).

So...here's the question: has anybody got a slick way to install gnome
2.8 on a RH9 box? I can't find rpms anywhere, red-carpet is no help,
<whine> <snivel> ...oh, sorry 'bout that.

Do I need to just ditch RH9? I can't make myself go to fedora so I guess
Debian or SUSE are my other choices (and I really don't want to do a
whole clean install just to upgrade evolution...).

Any advice? Any good stock tips? Anybody read this far?
