Do you see this only when writing mails? (Sounds like it, although the
first part is pretty much all-embracing.)
I recall a bug that periodically halts writing mails.
Please see the mailing list archives (August 2004) [1] for the entire

Basically your /etc/hosts file should be sane (containing localhost) and
the hostname should not be an FQDN.
