Updated from what to what? Did you upgrade over some pre-existing
installation or did you do a clean install?

I don't believe the fontconfig package contains any fonts itself, so
downgrading or upgrading it wouldn't make any difference.

Actually Bitstream Vera Sans Mono is quite similar in appearance and
looks very elegant when rendered by Xft with antialiasing. Sadly it
looks lousy in apps that still use Xfs like Emacs.
