It makes it a lot harder to do that and keep the system consistant with
the OS package system, which is not a minor consideration.

If I know the library and the application, I can probably compile it... 

but I break the OS and maybe they don't compile.  The GIMP is huge.  I
haven't compiled it in decades and I certain am not pulling down the
entire gnome system to do this.

I'm not trying to make a rant, but this just underscores my original
point, which is that PNG files don't work and can not be trusted
as a universal file format because the files created can not be
guaranteed to be viewable in decades later.

I have lost a lot of goodi and irreplacable  images of my grandchildren 
because I trusted the PNG community.  There should be a waning about
this.
