Cameras typically capture twice as many green samples as red or blue
samples, and PNG has no provision for efficiently storing data like
that.  (I could imagine a PNG image where every pixel had R or G or B
set and the others zero, and that would fit the sensor data well, but
that doesn't seem like a very efficient format.)
