Yes, Andrew. Welcome to the real world. I'm not disagreeing this is a
silly question[1], merely pointing out that somehow not everybody gets
the point or maybe thought he had reason to doubt. Whatever.
It is not unique to here. I, as a sysadmin, get to deal dayly with more
crap than I've seen you have kittens about on this list. Management
ASS-U-MEing no end and I get to mop up. Users doing incredibly and
obviously stupid things. While they *know* they're doing the wrong thing.
Including developers that are paid *more than twice* what I make that
seem to not be able to lace their own shoes at times. *two milimeters*
out of their field of expertise[2] and they're like fish in an oven.
This was possibly even worse when I did a volunteer gig[3] dealing with
students of an internationally famed *technical* university, tomorrow's
builders of the smart world. I'm not even mentioning the staff there.
Aggravating it is when you can't say they're wrong, or they don't want
to listen. Here there's a bunch of *eager* and *interested* people.
People that don't mind being told they're wrong, as long as you tell
them why, and what direction to go to improve. people *willing* to
learn.
Think about it, 400-something people on the list and one really bad
question in a week. Nothing to worry about, easily dealt with. When done
right the problem will even solve itself in time, by word of mouth. But
it needs sowing. Don't be sowing wind.
[1] This idea is, as I think we all know, one of the most fundamental
to the project, so the question is a *very* silly one.
[2] Writing software as opposed to keeping the darn stuff running.
[3] The bandwidth was nice. 100Mbit switched to a GigE backbone straight
to 10GigE netherlight to several gigabits over-the-pond. *sigh*
