All attempts are appreciated. :-) Thanks for replying.

The install docs say to press the calendar button to enter the 
bootloader, but I think I've tried it without doing that anyway.

It does, thankfully. (Thanks for pointing out the obvious step - I 
hadn't thought to try that.)

I've had a go at this with no success. I tried synce, with no 
connection. Then I tried to connect following these directions:

but again neither the ipaq or pc was detecting the other.

Yes, I used to use a modem on it, so I know it's COM1 / ttyS0.

I haven't tried that, but I did connect the old modem and got a response 
from it.

Hmm, well it looks more and more like it's the cable at fault. I guess 
I'll have to track down a second-hand cradle or serial cable.
