I just changed the default depth rate to 8, and now I can read the errors again:

xauth: (argv):1: bad display name "handheld:0" in "list" command
xauth: (stdin):1: badd display name "handheld:0" in "add" command

and later on:

(EE) FBDEV(0): FBIOPUT_VSCREENINFO: Invalid Argument
(EE) FBDEV(0): mode initialization failed

Fatal server error:
AddScreen/ScreenInit failed for driver 0
