Here's a thought:

How about a collapsible 'desktop' app which shows a qt-like sheet of
icons for launchable things like apps. Perhaps it could work totally
from the gtk-menu tree, and thus support all progs which create menu
entries on installation.

Another thought is an option to do away with the top bar and instead
show non-visible apps on the bottom taskbar. Can then move the 'kill'
icon to the right of the taskbar.  (Another option is to move all the
top bar items - (i) App name/window pulldown, (ii) next and prev
window buttons and (iii) kill button, to the right of the bottom bar).
Either way, you'd save a precious 16 vertical pixels of screen real
estate.
