By standard size do you mean height? That would seem to be determined by
the toolbar height. Is that locked in or can it be defined somewhere? 
For the width it seems like it would vary. Some applets just plain need
some room, such as the time. How would it be to define a few different
ones? Keep them on the small side unless it needs text? Maybe tapping on
the applet could bring up a small window with more info; date along with
time, percent of battery, load and memory usage, etc.

I'm still playing around with xkbd when I have the chance. To a large
degree its been a learning experience.

It would be nice to have xkbd collapse to the toolbar.  Could there be
cooperation between xstroke and xkbd to use the same space?
 
I'd like to see a screen rotation applet.

Cmd line with a history would be nice.

How about a full screen mode?
