Looking at my device, it looks like its in USB host mode by default.
Try:

rmmod ohci_hcd
modprobe g_ether

which should switch you to gadget ethernet. If you still have problems
see what "dmesg" says.

Ultimately some GUI to select this would be nice but I'm not a GUI
programmer and the kernel side of things is working ;-).
