Opie's Future Follow Up

Thanks everyone for the lively dicsussion regarding Opie's Future. I can see
that not all are happy with Trolltech, however Lorn has convinved me to keep
the faith. 

As a Java developer by day and a family man every other waking moment, my C
and C++ skills are in a constant state of atrophy. Lorn's comment regarding
3rd party app development hit the nail on the head for an armchair developer
like me: 

"One of the main reasons for lack of interest is
that OZ is incompatible with all the apps out
there, and developing a 3rd party app takes too
much effort, as there is no toolchain available.
Whenever someone asks, they get told -"use
openembedded".. blah! Not a good choice for
someone that only wants to develop one
application in their spare time. "

First, let me state that I know I am not the target audience for you guys,
so you are free to ignore this post.
I have made a couple unsuccesful attempts developing with OE. I'm sure I
could have worked through my problems given some more time and effort.
However, I recently tried my hand at maemo... and it worked like a charm. I
was up and running (ok, crawling) in very little time. This is not to say
that I prefer maemo, or even that it is a better development framework. But
the documentation and tools were clear and effective enough to allow access
for a newbie like me. 
But I still think the whole thing should be alot easier. I should not have
to use a 'sandbox' (scratchbox). I would love to be able to fire up an IDE
and develop, test, and build an Opie app for any number of devices. 

Can I do this now? Will Qt4 let me do this?
