Yes, but not by menu.  This function is only availble as a soft or hard
button which is configurable from the "ButtonAction Prefs" screen.

Mark all sets the "Mark" flag on all articles.  You can then do things to
"marked" articles (such as read, delete, etc.)
There is not very much room for menu items and I had to pick the most useful
ones for the menus.
I suspect that you don't really desire to mark them read anyway, but rather
that you desire to delete them.
It is very uncommon that marking un/read is actually useful in itself; it is
generally done as a preparation for some kind of deletion operation...

Tap the "(i)" icon in the upper left for help info for each screen.
What you desire to do is described in the help texts.
You should set the "Tap Action" in "Misc Prefs" to "lock" then, as you
scroll through the article list screen, you tap on the articles you wish to
lock.  When you are through the entire list, you do a DeleteAllUnlocked (or
DeleteAllUnlockedOnUp if you don't get to the bottom of the list).

The problem, again, is screen space.  There's just no good way to present
all that information...

I have to hard-code new parameters every time Palm comes out with new HW.
It works on the earlier Treos but I haven't released an update since the 680
came out...

Yes, this does what you desire it to do.  It has nothing to do with
downloading future articles.

Early versions of Palms were not able to do fully interactive Response
Alerts or Progress Dialogs so other, more primitive UI elements were used.
Some people prefer the simpler UI (progress dialogs, for example, slow down
execution long duration operations slightly so turning this off will make
things like threading speed up a tiny bit).  Palm HW that does not support
these options, do not show them; later HW users have their choice.
