But the main problem with irrecord is _not_ that it lacks a GUI. The 
program was written around 20 years ago, and we have acquired a lot of 
knowledge since then, knowledge that is not in that program. It is 
essentially the same program as Christoph Bartelmus wrote in 1998. It 
shows its age, and has a lot of problems. That is the problem, not GUI/CLI.

You should measure the frequency of the signal. IrScrutinizer does that 
(of course assuming appropriate hardware). irrecord does not -- it 
basically supports demodulating receivers only.

(Caveat: Looking at the Lirc code gives the impression that measuring 
modulation frequency was planned but never really implemented. It may be 
the case that there is a way to get a frequency measurement from 
irrecord (assuming a non-demodulating receiver or course), but I have 
never head of anyone doing it, and the documentation does not mention it.)
