IrScrutinizer is not irrecord with a GUI. It does not suffer from the 
same shortcomings as irrecord (but possibly others?). It separates 
clearly the GUI from the core functionality, the latter packed into an 
OO framework with a documented API, that is designed to be used as such. 
On top of that API, a GUI is written. Another user interface, for 
example CLI based, can comparatively easily be built on top of the API.

You are invited to contribute, for example in this vein. Sources are 
GPL3 and found on Github

Personally, I consider life too short to address the needs of those who 
"may not even have a second/desktop system to use".

How 'bout http://www.harctoolbox.org/arduino_nano.html ? I use to say 
"the price of a small pizza". You already mentioned that you possess a 
TSMP58000, which is the hardest component to get. The IrToy also works, 
but it is slightly more expensive.
