You're not proposing to directly couple the motor to the pump, are you?

All of the piston air compressors I've seen, from the smallest plastic
tire inflators to the largest industrial installations, have some sort
of gear or belt speed reduction from the motor to the pump so that both
devices can operate at their optimal speeds.

The only exceptions would be low-pressure diaphram pumps like those used
for aquarium aerators, etc., which often don't use rotary motors at all.
